Conservation Act 1987

New Zealand Conservation Authority and Conservation Boards - New Zealand Conservation Authority

6D: Membership

You could also call this:

"Who can be on the New Zealand Conservation Authority team"

The New Zealand Conservation Authority has members appointed by the Minister. You know the Minister is a person who makes big decisions for the country. The Minister chooses people who care about conservation, natural earth and marine sciences, and recreation. The Authority has members from different groups, like people who care about Maori affairs, tourism, and local government. One member is nominated by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, which was established by section 6 of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Act 1996.

The Minister also appoints people based on recommendations from groups like the Royal Society of New Zealand, the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, and the Federated Mountain Clubs. Some members are chosen after the Minister gives public notice, which is like an announcement, in newspapers and other media. The notice says how many people will be appointed and asks for nominations, which are like suggestions, to be sent to the Minister.

When you are appointed to the Authority, it is announced in the Gazette, which is like an official newspaper. The appointment starts from the date of the announcement or a later date. You cannot be a member of the Authority if you work for the Department, which is like a government team.
