Conservation Act 1987

Specially protected areas

18AB: Governor-General may declare that wetland be notified to Ramsar Secretariat

You could also call this:

"The Governor-General can officially recognise a special wetland in New Zealand."

The Governor-General can make a special declaration about a wetland. You need to know that this declaration is made on the advice of the Minister. The Governor-General can say what the wetland is, how big it is, and what its official name is.

The Minister must check the proposed name with the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa before making a recommendation. This check is done under subpart 3 of Part 2 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.

When the Governor-General makes this declaration, it becomes secondary legislation, which has its own rules for publication, as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
