Conservation Act 1987

Administration

60: Acquisition of land for administrative purposes

You could also call this:

"The government can buy or sell land to help manage the environment and conservation in New Zealand."

The Director-General can buy land or an interest in land for the Department's purposes and to help run the Conservation Act. You can think of the Department like a team that looks after New Zealand's natural environment. The Director-General is like the leader of this team.

The Director-General can sell land or an interest in land that was bought for the Department's purposes, but only if the land is not a conservation area or Crown land at the time of sale. Crown land is land that belongs to the government. The Director-General must follow some rules, like those in section 50(2) and the Land Act 1948, but not all of them.
