When you leave New Zealand, you have some things you need to do. You must go to an immigration control area or another special place and show yourself to an immigration officer. You need to do what the immigration officer tells you while you’re there. You also need to give them some information and fill out some forms.

If you can’t do these things because you’re too young or have a disability, the person looking after you (like your parent or guardian) needs to do them for you.

These rules might be different if there are special rules or if someone important says so. You can find more information about this in section 126(2) and (3) of an older law.

119Obligations of persons leaving New Zealand

  1. Except as provided in regulations made under this Act, or in any special direction, every person leaving New Zealand has the following responsibilities:

  2. to present himself or herself to an immigration officer at an immigration control area or any other prescribed place:
    1. to comply with any direction of an immigration officer while at such an area or place:
      1. to provide such information and complete such documentation as may be prescribed.

        1. Where a person leaving New Zealand is, by reason of age or disability, incapable of complying with any of the requirements of subsection (1), it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian or other person for the time being having the care of that person to comply with those requirements on that person’s behalf.
