63: Expiry of visa

Your visa will end at different times depending on your situation. If you are in New Zealand, your visa will expire at the start of the day after the earliest of these events:

The date shown on your visa as the end date.

A specific event happens that your visa says will make it expire.

The last day of your allowed stay in New Zealand ends.

Three months after an epidemic management notice ends, but only if your visa is a special type called a temporary entry class visa covered by section 78 and hasn’t been cancelled earlier.

If you are outside New Zealand, your visa will expire at the earlier of these two times:

The day and time you left New Zealand, if your visa doesn’t let you come back.

The start of the day after the last date your visa allows you to travel to New Zealand.

63Expiry of visa

  1. If the holder of a visa is in New Zealand, the visa expires on the earliest of—

  2. the beginning of the day after the date specified in the visa as the expiry date:
    1. the beginning of the day after the day on which an event specified in the visa as the event on the occurrence of which the visa will expire occurs:
      1. the beginning of the day after the last day of the period for which the visa grants stay in New Zealand to the holder:
        1. the beginning of the day that is 3 months after the day on which an epidemic management notice expires, if the visa—
          1. is a temporary entry class visa to which section 78 applies; and
            1. has not been cancelled earlier.
            2. If the holder of a visa is outside New Zealand, the visa expires on the earlier of—

            3. the day and time the holder left New Zealand, if the conditions of the visa do not allow further travel to New Zealand:
              1. the beginning of the day after the date that is specified by the conditions of the visa as the last day of the period of time within which travel is allowed to New Zealand.
