Immigration Act 2009

Appeals, reviews, and other proceedings - Immigration and Protection Tribunal

220: Role of chair of Tribunal

You could also call this:

“Chair oversees Tribunal operations and member conduct”

The chair of the Tribunal has special duties in addition to deciding appeals and matters. You should know that the chair is responsible for making sure the Tribunal members do their jobs efficiently and in line with the Act’s purposes. The chair also directs the education and training of Tribunal members and handles any complaints about them.

The chair can do more to help the Tribunal run smoothly. They can create practice notes to guide how the Tribunal works, as long as these notes don’t go against the Act or its regulations. These notes can help Tribunal members, staff, and people appearing before the Tribunal. The chair can also create a code of conduct for Tribunal members to follow. Lastly, the chair can choose specific members to decide on particular appeals.
