The Governor-General can make special rules called transitional regulations. These rules help everyone adjust to the new Immigration Act 2009.

These regulations can do several things to make the change easier. They can add to or replace the existing rules about how the new law starts. They can also say that for a certain time, some parts of the new law won’t apply, or that some words will have special meanings. The regulations might even keep some old rules working for a while.

The Governor-General can make any other rules needed to help everyone move smoothly from the old law to the new one. However, these special rules can only last for up to two years after this part of the law starts. After that, they must stop.
