Immigration Act 2009

Compliance and information

272: Purpose of Part

You could also call this:

“This part explains the special powers immigration officers have to gather and share information”

This part of the law gives immigration officers special powers to get information. These powers help the Department of Immigration do several important things.

You need to know that immigration officers can collect information to find out if anyone is lying or cheating about immigration. They can also use this information to find people who aren’t following the rules of their visas or other immigration requirements.

The law also lets immigration officers use these powers to help find people who might need to leave New Zealand because they broke immigration rules.

The Department of Immigration can share information with other government departments and agencies. This sharing helps those departments and agencies to follow their own rules and to check if people can get government services. It also helps the Department of Immigration do its job properly.

Lastly, the law gives police officers the same powers as immigration officers to get information and find people who might need to leave New Zealand.
