Immigration Act 2009

Compliance and information - Power to access address information

275: Persons required to provide access to address information

You could also call this:

“Who can be asked to give information about where you live or who you are”

You can be asked to give information about where you live or who you are. This can happen if someone from the government signs a special paper. The people and groups who might have to share this information include:

Government departments like New Zealand Customs Service, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, Land Transport New Zealand, Department of Building and Housing, Kāinga Ora–Homes and Communities, and Department of Corrections. If any of these departments change their name or job, the new department will also have to share information.

Schools and other places where you learn can be asked to share information, but only about students who don’t have to go to school by law.

Companies that deliver mail and packages, phone companies, internet companies, and TV companies that you pay for can be asked to share information.

Banks and other places that help you with money can be asked to share information.

Local councils and insurance companies can be asked to share information.

Companies that give you electricity, gas, or water can be asked to share information.

People who help buy and sell houses can be asked to share information.

If someone is looking for you, your boss or old boss might be asked to share information about where you are.

All these people and groups might have to tell the government where you live or who you are if they’re asked in the right way.
