This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Emergency Management Bill (No 2)

Emergency response and recovery: states of emergency and transition periods - Declaring states of emergency - Declaring state of local emergency

115: State of local emergency may be concurrent with national emergency declarations

You could also call this:

"A local emergency can happen at the same time as a national emergency."

You can have a state of local emergency at the same time as a national emergency declaration. This means that if there is a big emergency somewhere else, it does not stop a local emergency from being declared. You can find more information about this in sections 113 and 114. If a national emergency is declared under section 109, or a national transition period is declared under section 142, it does not affect the local emergency. However, if a national emergency or transition period is already happening, then section 59 applies. This is important to know when there are two emergencies at the same time. A local emergency keeps going even if a national emergency or transition period is declared later for a different emergency. This is true even if both emergencies happen in the same place. You can still have a local emergency in that area.
