The Minister of Local Government will decide which offshore islands need emergency management. You will be able to find out which islands are chosen in the Gazette. The Minister will also assign an Emergency Management Committee to work with them on emergency management for each island. The Minister of Local Government is in charge of certain parts of New Zealand, called offshore islands, as stated in section 22 of the Local Government Act 2002. When the Minister makes a decision about offshore islands, it is called secondary legislation. You can find out more about what this means in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019. The Minister's decisions will be published in a special notice, so you can stay informed about what is happening with offshore islands and emergency management.
