Corrections Act 2004

Preliminary provisions

"When the Corrections Act 2004 starts to apply"

When you look at the Corrections Act 2004, you will see it has different parts that start at different times. Most of the Act starts on a date chosen by the Governor-General. You can find out when the Governor-General chooses this date by looking at an Order in Council.

Some parts of the Act, like sections 182A to 182E, start when the Parole (Extended Supervision) Amendment Act 2004 starts. Other parts, like sections 200 to 203, start the day after the Act gets the Royal assent. The Royal assent is when the Governor-General agrees to make the Act a law.

When the Governor-General makes an order about when the Act starts, it is called secondary legislation, which has its own publication requirements, as explained in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
