Corrections Act 2004

Corrections system - Coercive powers - Searching of prisoners and other persons

103AAA: Scanner search authorised to ascertain risk of communicable disease

You could also call this:

"Prison staff can use a scanner to check your temperature if they think you might be sick."

Illustration for Corrections Act 2004

The prison manager can let someone use a scanner to check your body temperature if they think it's necessary to see if you have a communicable disease. They must get advice from a health professional first and make sure the scanner is approved by the chief executive. The prison manager can choose to check one person or a group of people.

The prison manager can only let the scanner be used for a certain amount of time, and this time must be based on the health professional's advice. They have to say how long the scanner can be used when they give permission. The prison manager can change or stop the permission later if they need to.

You can find more information about the law that allows this in the Corrections Amendment Act 2024.
