Illustration for Corrections Act 2004

If you are a prisoner, you can be self-employed while in prison, but you need the prison manager's approval. You can do this work inside or outside the prison where you are being held, unless you are only waiting for your trial or are being held under the Immigration Act 2009. The prison manager will only approve your self-employment if it is a type of work that the chief executive has agreed to and if you do it under the conditions they have set.

The type of work you can do is work that will give you experience or help you get better and fit back into the community when you leave prison. You must do this work according to any rules that have been set.

The prison manager has to make sure you follow these rules when you are self-employed in prison.
