"Keeping Communities Safe and Helping People Change"
The corrections system is in place to keep you and your community safe. It does this by making sure people who have committed crimes are treated fairly and humanely. This includes people who are in prison, on home detention, or serving community-based sentences.
The system follows certain principles to ensure it works fairly. One of these principles is that public safety is the most important thing to consider when making decisions about people who have committed crimes. Another principle is that the needs and interests of victims must be taken into account.
The corrections system also tries to help people who have committed crimes to stop committing crimes in the future. It does this by providing programmes and activities that help them to change their behaviour and become productive members of society. This can include things like counselling, education, and job training.
The system also recognises the importance of family and cultural ties in helping people to rehabilitate. It tries to involve families in the rehabilitation process and to take into account the cultural background and identity of the person who has committed the crime. You can find more information about how the corrections system works by looking at the rules set out in this Act and the regulations made under this Act.
People who work in the corrections system have to follow these principles and consider them when making decisions. They must also make sure that people who are in the corrections system are treated fairly and have access to information and complaints procedures. The corrections system aims to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone, while also helping people to rehabilitate and reintegrate into the community.
