Corrections Act 2004

Corrections system - Establishment and operation of prisons - Assessment, use of time, management plans, and programmes

49: Prisoners must be assessed on reception and have needs addressed

You could also call this:

"Prison staff must check new prisoners are safe and healthy, and help them if they need it."

When you go to prison, the person in charge must make sure you are assessed quickly. This assessment is to find out if you have any immediate physical or mental health, safety, or security needs. The person in charge must also make sure any needs they find are taken care of.

The assessment includes checking if you are at risk of harming yourself. This is called an at-risk assessment.

The chief executive is responsible for ensuring your needs are met, as stated in the Corrections Act 2004, and amendments such as those made by the Corrections Amendment Act 2019.
