Corrections system - Establishment and operation of prisons - Mail to and from prisoners

76: Prisoners may send and receive mail

You could also call this:

"Prisoners can send and receive letters, but must follow certain rules."

Illustration for Corrections Act 2004

You can send and receive as much mail as you want if you are a prisoner. You can write to anyone you like and they can write back to you. However, there are some rules you must follow, which are outlined in sections 105 and 108 of this Act, and also in section 168A of the Criminal Procedure Act 2011.

You must also follow any rules about how you send and receive mail, what you can use to write letters, and who pays for postage, which are set out in regulations made under this Act. These rules help make sure everyone follows the same process when sending and receiving mail in prison.

When you are in prison, you need to be aware of these rules so you can send and receive mail properly.
