Part 4New Zealand Law Society
Powers
73Practising fees
Every lawyer must pay an annual practising fee to the New Zealand Law Society.
The amount of the annual practising fee is to be fixed from time to time by a resolution made by the Council of the New Zealand Law Society (see subsections (6) and (7)).
The money received by the New Zealand Law Society by way of practising fees is to be used by the Society for the sole purpose of funding the regulatory functions and powers of the Society.
A resolution under subsection (2) may provide for the payment of practising fees of different amounts by different classes of lawyers.
A practising fee is payable in such manner as the practice rules prescribe or authorise and is recoverable on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society as a debt due to it.
The Council may not fix fees under subsection (2) unless the Minister has approved the proposed fees.
A resolution under subsection (2) is secondary legislation (see Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019 for publication requirements).
