When you read this part of the law, some words have special meanings. You need to know what these words mean. The word "agent" refers to certain people who work with lawyers or conveyancing practitioners. The term "claim event" is explained in section 306. You can find the meaning of "de facto partner" in section 2C of the Property (Relationships) Act 1976. This includes a former de facto partner. The phrase "pecuniary loss" does not include losses that happen after a claim event. A "regulatory society" is either the New Zealand Law Society or the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers. The word "theft" refers to crimes described in certain sections of the Crimes Act 1961, such as sections 217, 218, 219, 220, and 222.
