The Board gets information from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. This happens under the Privacy Act 2020, specifically section 172 and Schedule 4. You can think of the Registrar as someone who keeps track of motor vehicles. The Board can use this information for a few purposes. It can check if a certificate for a motor vehicle was issued correctly. You might be wondering what this certificate is for - it's for self-containment, which means the vehicle has its own toilet and water facilities. The Board can also use the information to investigate complaints or matters on its own. It can look into complaints made under section 87I or start an investigation under section 87K. The Board can then tell the Registrar to update the register of self-contained motor vehicles based on the information it received.
