102: Deputy chief technical officers

The Director-General and other chief executives can appoint deputy chief technical officers. You need to have the right experience and qualifications for the job. The deputy chief technical officer must be employed under the Public Service Act 2020.

102Deputy chief technical officers

  1. The Director-General and the chief executive of any other department may appoint, in respect of any chief technical officer appointed by the Director-General or that chief executive, 1 or more deputy chief technical officers who must in each case be a person with appropriate experience, technical competence, and qualifications relevant to the area of responsibilities allocated by the chief executive to that person.

  2. A person appointed as a deputy chief technical officer must be employed under the Public Service Act 2020.

  3. Subject to the direction of the chief technical officer concerned, a deputy chief technical officer shall have and may exercise all of the powers, duties, and functions of a chief technical officer under this Act, including the power to appoint inspectors, authorised persons, and accredited persons.

  4. The chief executive (including the Director-General) may not delegate to any person the power to appoint deputy chief technical officers.
