Biosecurity Act 1993

Exclusive economic zone

162AB: Application of Act in EEZ

You could also call this:

"This law also applies in New Zealand's special ocean area, with some changes to respect other countries' rights."

This Act applies in the Exclusive Economic Zone, but only when it is relevant and the language used in the Act allows it. You need to consider the modifications made by this part of the Act when it is applied in the Exclusive Economic Zone. The modifications also apply to regulations and instruments under this Act.

When a provision in this Act is used in the Exclusive Economic Zone, it must be interpreted in a way that respects the rights of other countries. This includes respecting the freedom of navigation and overflight, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Act is applied in the Exclusive Economic Zone with some changes.

The changes made to the Act for the Exclusive Economic Zone also apply to some regulations and instruments under this Act, as stated in section 73 of the Biosecurity Law Reform Act 2012.
