Animal Products Act 1999

Preliminary provisions - Application of Act generally

10: Application of Act includes exclusive economic zone

You could also call this:

"This law applies to animal products in New Zealand and its surrounding waters."

This Act applies to you when you produce and process animal material and animal products in New Zealand. It also applies when you do these things in New Zealand fisheries waters, which are defined in the Fisheries Act 1996. The Act does not apply to processing fish on a fishing vessel in the exclusive economic zone unless the vessel is registered under the Fisheries Act 1983 or the Fisheries Act 1996, or if it is used to harvest farmed finfish or shellfish.

If you catch fish on a vessel registered under the Fisheries Act 1996 and bring them to New Zealand, the law treats them as if they were caught in New Zealand fisheries waters. This is the case until someone proves otherwise.

The law is in place to regulate how you handle animal products, including fish, in New Zealand and its waters.
