Restrictions on electrical work - Exemptions

80: Exemption for maintenance of domestic appliances

You could also call this:

“Rules for fixing your own home appliances safely”

You can do some electrical work on your own appliances if you follow certain rules. These rules are:

The appliance must be mainly for you or your close family to use at home, not for business. You can only do the type of work that the rules say you can do. You must do the work safely and follow all the rules. You can’t have the appliance plugged in while you’re working on it.

After you finish the work, someone with the right licence needs to check it and say it’s safe before you can plug it in again. This last rule only applies if the regulations say it’s needed.

Close family includes your grandparents, parents, step-parents, brothers and sisters (including half-brothers and half-sisters), your partner, children, step-children, and grandchildren. It also includes your partner’s parents and step-parents.
