Electricity Act 1992

Restrictions on electrical work - Exemptions

79: Exemption for domestic electrical wiring work

You could also call this:

“Rules for doing your own electrical wiring at home”

You can do electrical wiring work in your own home or a home you plan to live in with your family. However, there are some rules you need to follow:

The work you do must be within certain limits set by the rules. You need to do the work in a way that follows the rules and is safe. While you’re doing the work, you can’t connect any of it to the power.

Before you can use the wiring, a registered person with the right licence needs to test it and say it’s okay. This person will also connect the wiring to the power. Sometimes, the rules might not require the testing and connecting to be done by a registered person.

When we say “owner”, we mean the person who would get the rent if the home was rented out at the highest possible price.
