Electricity Act 1992

Registration and licensing of electrical workers and employer licences - Register of electrical workers

126: Purpose of register

You could also call this:

“The register helps people find and check information about electricians and electrical workers”

The register serves several important purposes for you and other members of the public. It allows you to check if someone is registered or has a licence to do electrical work, and to see their registration or licence history. This can help you choose the right person for your electrical job.

You can also use the register to find contact information for registered electricians, people with provisional licences, or businesses with employer licences. If you want to know about any disciplinary actions taken against an electrician in the last three years, you can find that information in the register too.

The register isn’t just for current electricians. You can also look up information about people who were previously registered or licensed, including their past registration or licence history.

The register is also useful for official purposes. It helps the Electrical Workers Registration Board, the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board, the Secretary, investigators, and the Registrar to carry out their jobs under the law.

It’s important to know that sometimes, the Registrar might limit public access to certain information in the register. They can do this in special circumstances as allowed by section 137 of the Act.
