Illustration for Fisheries Act 1996

You have a quota for a type of fish. This quota is shown as shares. These shares are whole numbers. The total shares for each type of fish add up to 100,000,000. You can think of each share as a small part of the total amount of fish that can be caught. One share is equal to a very small part of the total allowable catch. This small part is one hundred-millionth of the total allowable catch. The quota is like a big pie cut into 100,000,000 small pieces, and each piece is a share.
