The object of sections 175 to 185 is to make better provision for areas of New Zealand fisheries waters that are special to iwi or hapu. You can think of these areas as being important for food or for spiritual and cultural reasons. The goal is to recognise the rights of iwi and hapu, as secured in Article II of the Treaty of Waitangi, and to respect their rangatiratanga.
