You can get a unique identifier from an approved service delivery organisation. They get these identifiers from the chief executive. The organisation can only use the identifier for certain tasks. You are allowed to get a unique identifier even if it goes against the information privacy principle. This principle is set out in section 22 of the Privacy Act 2020. The organisation can give you an identifier that the chief executive assigned to you. The organisation can only use your unique identifier for certain tasks. These tasks are set out in section 296B. They cannot use your identifier for other purposes.

296ZHUnique identifiers

  1. The purpose of this section is—

  2. to enable approved service delivery organisations to assign to any person specified in section 189 unique identifiers that have been assigned by the chief executive; and
    1. to restrict approved service delivery organisations from using such unique identifiers for purposes other than carrying out the specified functions, duties, or powers transferred to them under section 296B.
      1. Despite information privacy principle 13(2) set out in section 22 of the Privacy Act 2020, an approved service delivery organisation may assign to any person specified in section 189 any unique identifier assigned to that person by the chief executive.

      2. This section does not authorise an approved service delivery organisation to use a unique identifier assigned by the chief executive, except for the purpose of carrying out the specified functions, duties, or powers that have been transferred to that approved service delivery organisation under section 296B.
