Illustration for Fisheries Act 1996

When you are looking at over-fishing thresholds, the Minister considers some things. You need to think about how well deemed values work to encourage commercial fishers to have enough catch entitlement. The Minister also thinks about the need to encourage fishers to have enough entitlement for certain fish stocks. The Minister considers the risks to the sustainability of the fish stock. You have to think about whether the fish stock is at risk now or might be in the future. The Minister also looks at any other relevant matters. The Minister makes these considerations before making a recommendation under section 77(1). This helps the Minister make a good decision about over-fishing thresholds. You can find more information about how this law was amended by looking at the Fisheries Act 1996 Amendment Act 1999.
