222: Searching vehicles

You could also call this:

"What happens when a customs officer searches your vehicle"

When you are stopped by a customs officer, they can search your vehicle. The officer must follow certain rules, which are outlined in the Search and Surveillance Act 2012, except for some specific parts. You can find these rules in Part 4 of the Search and Surveillance Act 2012.

If some goods are taken from you and given to the government, some of these rules do not apply. This happens when goods are forfeited to the Crown under section 225 of the Customs and Excise Act 1996. Specific rules that do not apply include sections 125(4), 131(5)(f), and 133, and subparts 6 and 8 of Part 4 of the Search and Surveillance Act 2012.
