"Changing the rules for searching for evidence of breaking petrol rules"

The law is changing the Petroleum Demand Restraint Act 1981. You can find this Act on the New Zealand legislation website. This change affects what happens when someone is suspected of breaking the rules of this Act or its regulations.

The change says that regulations can be made about searching for evidence of these suspected rule breaks. This can happen even if the suspected rule break is not serious enough to result in prison time.

Some people, chosen by the Minister, will be allowed to search places, vehicles, or things if they have a warrant. These searches will follow the rules set out in the Search and Surveillance Act 2012. The people doing the searches will be treated as enforcement officers, and they will be able to apply for a warrant to search for evidence.
