Civil Aviation Act 1990

Aviation security

80G: Searches of persons

You could also call this:

"How airport security officers might search you to keep flying safe"

When an aviation security officer needs to search you as part of aviation security, they might ask you to do a few things. You might need to take off or move some of your clothes so they can search you better. This could mean taking off your coat, jacket, or other outer clothes. But don't worry, you won't have to take off all your clothes.

The officer might also ask you to take off things like gloves, shoes, socks, hats, belts, or jewellery. They might need to do a pat down search, which means they will gently touch your body to check for anything unusual.

If you're a girl or woman, only a female officer will search you, unless they're using a machine to do the search.

A pat down search means the officer can run their hands over your body, even under your outer clothes, but not under your underwear. They can also put their hand in your pockets. They might ask you to open your mouth, show your hands and feet, or lift your hair.

The officer can also look at any items you're carrying, and search any clothes or accessories you've taken off for the search.

Remember, these rules are there to keep everyone safe when flying.
