Civil Aviation Act 1990

Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand

72B: Functions of Authority

You could also call this:

“The Civil Aviation Authority keeps flying safe and organised in New Zealand”

The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand has many important jobs to do. Here’s what they are responsible for:

You should know that the Authority works to keep flying safe in New Zealand and in other countries. They set up a special group called the Aviation Security Service to help with this.

If there are any accidents or problems with flying, the Authority looks into what happened. They also tell another group called the Transport Accident Investigation Commission about these incidents.

The Authority keeps important records about flying in New Zealand. They have a list of all the aircraft in the country and keep track of other important information.

They make sure that pilots and other people who fly have the maps and information they need. Sometimes they work with other people or groups to share this information.

The Authority gives advice to the Minister when asked. They can also help other government groups if the Minister asks them to, as long as it doesn’t stop them from doing their main job.

They teach people about flying and how to do it safely. They can also make agreements with flying authorities in other countries.

If the Minister tells them to, the Authority can run a centre to help with search and rescue operations. They might have to coordinate or take part in rescue missions.

The Authority has to do any other jobs that the law or the Minister gives them. They provide support to the Aviation Security Service and keep their work separate from their other tasks.
