Civil Aviation Act 1990

Functions, powers, and duties of participants in the civil aviation system

14B: Search and rescue operations

You could also call this:

“Rules for finding and helping people in danger”

You need to know about search and rescue operations in New Zealand. The Minister is in charge of this. Here’s what they do:

The Minister sets up and runs a centre to coordinate different types of search and rescue operations. This includes rescues for planes, ships, and other situations the Minister thinks are important.

The Minister can do what’s needed to make these rescue operations work well. They can also do things to follow international agreements about search and rescue that New Zealand has agreed to.

The Minister can choose people to help with or lead these rescue operations.

If someone helps with a rescue when asked, or if their vehicle, ship, or plane is used for a rescue when requested, the Minister can decide to pay them. This money comes from funds that Parliament has set aside for this purpose.
