Civil Aviation Act 1990

Entry into the civil aviation system

6: Requirement to register aircraft

You could also call this:

"You must register your aircraft to fly it in New Zealand"

If you have an aircraft that you can use for 28 days or more, and you want to fly it in New Zealand, you need to register it. This means you must get a valid certificate of registration for your aircraft. You can get this from the Director of Civil Aviation in New Zealand, or from certain other countries' aviation authorities.

You can't register your aircraft in New Zealand if it's already registered in another country. The Director can decide not to register an aircraft based on the rules.

If you don't agree with a decision about registering your aircraft, you can appeal to the District Court.
