Employment Relations Act 2000

Employment relations education leave

77: Allocation of employment relations education leave to eligible employee

You could also call this:

“A union tells a worker and their boss about special days off for learning about work rules.”

Your union can give you employment relations education leave. They do this by sending you a notice. They also send a copy to your employer. The notice tells you:

  • That the union has given you this leave
  • How many days of leave you get
  • That you need to use the leave before the end of the year
  • What sections 78 and 79 of the law say about this leave

Just because the union gives you this leave doesn’t mean you can automatically take it. There are other rules about how you can use it.

      1. that the employee must take the employment relations education leave by the end of the year in which it is allocated; and
        1. of the terms or effect of sections 78 and 79.
