Employment Relations Act 2000

General provisions - Representation

236: Representation

You could also call this:

“You can choose someone to speak or act for you when dealing with your employer or the law.”

When you have the right to do something under certain laws, you can choose someone else to do it for you. This can be in relation to your employer or in the Authority or court. You can pick anyone to represent you for this purpose.

If you are an employer, you also have the right to choose someone to represent you. This can be in relation to an employee or in the Authority or court. The person representing you must show they have the authority to do so.

These rules apply to several laws, including the Employment Relations Act 2000, the Accident Compensation Act 2001, the Support Workers (Pay Equity) Settlements Act 2017, the Equal Pay Act 1972, the Holidays Act 2003, the Home and Community Support (Payment for Travel Between Clients) Settlement Act 2016, the Human Rights Act 1993, the Minimum Wage Act 1983, the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987, the Policing Act 2008, the Public Service Act 2020, and the Wages Protection Act 1983. These laws are all part of New Zealand’s employment laws. The person you choose to represent you must prove they have the right to do so.
