Illustration for Gambling Act 2003

When a New Zealand lottery is drawn, the Lotteries Commission must check the result to make sure it is correct. They do this by following a procedure that they have agreed on with the Department and the Auditor-General. After they have checked the result, they announce or display the official result in a way that follows the rules for that type of lottery.

You can only hear the official result from the Lotteries Commission or from a broadcaster they have a contract with. If someone else tells you the result before the official announcement, they are not supposed to do that.

If someone breaks this rule, they can get in trouble and have to pay a fine of up to $200. The official result is the result of the lottery draw that is done according to the law.
