Illustration for Gambling Act 2003

If you are under 18 years old, you commit an offence if you buy a ticket in certain games, like instant games or lotteries. You also commit an offence if you try to buy a ticket in these games for yourself or someone else. If someone buys a ticket in these games for you and you are under 18, they commit an offence. You commit an offence if you sell a ticket in these games to someone under 18 years old, or if you give them credit to buy a ticket.

It is not an offence if you honestly thought the person was 18 years or older. You can prove this if you saw a document that showed their age. If you commit an offence, you might have to pay a fine, up to $500 if you are under 18, or up to $1,000 if you are older. A notice about these games can be found in the Legislation Act 2019, which explains how it is published.
