Local Government Act 2002

Structure and reorganisation of local government - Local Government Commission

32: Review of operation of Act and Local Electoral Act 2001

You could also call this:

“Checking if the rules for local councils are working well”

The Commission has to look at how this Act and the Local Electoral Act 2001 are working. They need to write a report about it and give it to the Minister. This report should be given to the Minister as soon as possible after the local authority elections in 2007.

The review needs to look at a few important things. It needs to check how giving local authorities full powers has affected things. It also needs to see if the ways councils talk to people and make plans are good value for money. Lastly, it needs to look at whether more people are getting involved in local government and if local authorities are representing people better.

If the Commission thinks any changes should be made to this Act or the Local Electoral Act 2001 before the local authority elections in 2007, they need to tell the Minister by 1 July 2005.
