Powers of Minister to act in relation to local authorities - Ministerial powers of assistance and intervention - Minister may appoint Commission

258G: How Commission appointed

You could also call this:

“How the Minister picks people to help with local government problems”

A Commission can have one or more members. If there are two or more members, you need to know that the Minister will choose one of them to be the chairperson.

The Minister appoints each member of a Commission by writing them a notice. This notice is important because it tells the member some key things:

  1. What the Commission is supposed to do (called the ‘terms of reference’). This includes explaining the problem they need to work on and any limits to what they’re allowed to do.

  2. When the member’s job starts and ends.

  3. When the whole Commission starts and ends its work.

This is how the Minister sets up a Commission to help with local government issues.
