Local Government Act 2002

Offences, penalties, infringement offences, and legal proceedings - Legal proceedings - Recovery of debts

252: Recovery of debts

You could also call this:

“How local councils can get money you owe them”

If a local authority provides you with works, materials, or things, you need to pay for them. This money is considered a debt that you owe to the local authority. The local authority can recover this debt from you.

Similarly, if you owe money to the local authority as a development contribution, this is also treated as a debt. The local authority has the right to recover this money from you as well.

In both cases, the local authority can take steps to collect the money you owe them, just like any other debt.
