Council-controlled organisations and council organisations - Directors

60A: Significant decisions of council-controlled organisations affecting land or water

You could also call this:

“Council groups must consider Māori connections to land and water before making big choices”

When a council-controlled organisation is going to make a big decision that might affect land or water, they have to think about how it will impact Māori people. You need to consider the special connection Māori have with their ancestral lands, waters, important places, and treasured things. This includes thinking about how the decision might affect sacred sites, plants, and animals that are important to Māori culture and traditions. It’s important to take these things into account before making any significant choices that could change the land or water.

60ASignificant decisions of council-controlled organisations affecting land or water

  1. Before a council-controlled organisation makes a decision that may significantly affect land or a body of water, it must take into account the relationship of Māori and their culture and traditions with their ancestral land, water, sites, wāhi tapu, valued flora and fauna, and other taonga.
