Local Government Act 2002

Regulatory, enforcement, and coercive powers of local authorities - Powers in relation to water services and trade wastes - Discharge of sewage and trade wastes

196: Discharge of trade wastes

You could also call this:

“Rules for businesses putting waste water into council drains”

You can discharge trade wastes from your business into the sewerage drains that are controlled by your local council. You can do this in two ways:

  1. You can get permission from the council to discharge your trade wastes.

  2. You can discharge without permission, but only if the council’s trade waste rules allow it, and only as much as the rules permit.

Remember, this doesn’t mean you can ignore the council’s trade waste rules. You still need to follow them. Also, you need to follow the rules in the Resource Management Act 1991. This act has rules about how we use our environment, and it’s important to follow these rules too when you’re discharging trade wastes.
