Local Government Act 2002

Governance and management of local authorities and community boards - Register of members’ pecuniary interests

54H: Responsibility of members

You could also call this:

“Members must follow the rules and tell people about their money interests without being reminded”

You are responsible for making sure you do what this part of the law says you must do. No one else will remind you or check that you’ve done it correctly.

You need to tell people about your money interests by a certain date. You have to make sure the information you give is correct and complete. The person in charge of keeping records (called a Registrar) doesn’t have to tell you if you’re late or if you’ve made a mistake. They also don’t have to chase you for this information.

Remember, these rules are extra to other rules about money interests. Just because you’ve told people about your money interests under these rules doesn’t mean you’ve done everything you need to do under other rules. There’s another law called the Local Authorities (Members’ Interests) Act 1968 that you also need to follow.
