Governance and management of local authorities and community boards - Local boards

48E: Membership of local boards

You could also call this:

“How people join and lead local boards”

The membership of a local board includes people you elect and sometimes people appointed by the governing body. You vote for most of the members according to the Local Electoral Act 2001. If a special order says so, the governing body can appoint some members too.

Every local board has a chairperson. The board members usually choose the chairperson from among themselves by voting. But sometimes, if a special order allows it, you might get to vote directly for the chairperson.

The way board members select their chairperson, if they do it themselves, follows special voting rules. These rules are explained in another part of the law.

Remember, the exact makeup of your local board might be different depending on special orders that apply to your area. These orders can change how members and the chairperson are chosen.
