Illustration for Oranga Tamariki Act 1989

When a care and protection co-ordinator is planning a family group conference for you, they must talk to a care and protection resource panel. They will also try to talk to your family, whanau, or family group about the conference. They want to know what your family thinks about when and where the conference should be held, who should attend, and how the conference should be run. The care and protection co-ordinator will try to make the conference happen in a way that respects your family's wishes, as long as it is fair and follows the principles of the Oranga Tamariki Act, and is in line with section 22.

The care and protection co-ordinator does not have to talk to the care and protection resource panel if the conference is being held under section 18AAA. You can expect the care and protection co-ordinator to work with your family to make decisions about the conference. They will consider what your family thinks is best for you when planning the conference.
