When you are in the care of an iwi social service or a cultural social service, the person in charge has the power to make decisions for you. This person is called the convener of the social service. The convener can exercise all the rights and duties that the social service has, on behalf of the social service, as set out in the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989.

The convener's powers include making decisions about your care and wellbeing. They have these powers because of the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989.

This means the convener can act on behalf of the social service to make sure you get the care and support you need, as outlined in the Act, which was amended by the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Amendment Act 1994.
