Illustration for Oranga Tamariki Act 1989

When you apply to the court for a care or protection order for a child or young person, the court can make a temporary order. The court can do this if you ask for it, or if a lawyer for the child or young person asks for it, or if the court decides to do it on its own. The temporary order is made under the rules in section 86 and it happens while the court is still deciding about the main application.

The court can make this temporary order to help the child or young person until the court makes a final decision. You or a lawyer for the child or young person can ask the court for this temporary order. The court has the power to make this order even if nobody asks for it, as long as it is following the rules in section 86.
